Turnover Is High, and Our Selection Process Is to Blame. How Do We Fix It?

Turnover Is High, and Our Selection Process Is to Blame. How Do We Fix It?
If employee turnover begins with a poor selection process, what steps could we take to improve it?—We Want Them, HR recruiter, services, India

There are many steps in the recruitment and selection process. You will need to perform a diagnosis of where exactly the process is breaking down. Some suggestions for improvement are:
  • Define roles and responsibilities clearly.
  • Spell out competencies and characteristics required for the job.
  • Use behavioral-based interviewing techniques.
  • Use qualified recruiters and interviewers.
  • Use an interview panel instead of just one interviewer.
  • Include the job seeker's prospective supervisor and team members on the interview panel.
  • Use a professional recruiting firm (if outsourcing).
  • Conduct thorough reference checks.
  • Check to be sure salaries, rewards and conditions are market-competitive.
  • Select from a wider pool of candidates, if possible.
  • Conduct pre-employment tests.
Which of these process steps or capabilities you tackle will depend on the result of your diagnosis.
